The old claim that 72,000 people were executed during Henry VIII\u2019s reign<\/strong> is now regarded as highly questionable, with later estimates sometimes putting the figure nearer 57,000<\/strong>. No exact total survives, and historians caution that even the lower figure may be too high. What is beyond doubt is that execution became a very real instrument of Tudor government during Henry\u2019s reign.<\/p> Some victims openly challenged the king. Others became casualties of court politics, religious upheaval, disputed treason charges and the vicious rivalries surrounding Henry\u2019s throne.
